MURPHYSBORO — A coroner’s jury will convene later this month to examine the cause and manner of death of Molly Young, who died of a fatal gunshot wound almost 10 months ago in a Carbondale apartment.

Jackson County Coroner Thomas Kupferer will hold an inquest Thursday, Jan. 31 at the courthouse in Murphysboro to look into the death of Young, whose body was found March 24 at the home of Richie Minton.

An inquest functions as neither a civil or criminal proceeding but serves instead as a probe into the manner of an individual’s death. By statute, the six-member coroner’s jury is tasked with determining whether an unaccounted death occurred as a result of homicide, suicide or accidental causes. Civil or criminal proceedings may or may not follow.

Authorities found the body of 21-year-old Young, a Marion High School graduate, at the apartment of Minton, a Carbondale Police Department dispatcher whom Young’s family has described as her on-and-off boyfriend.

According to radio archives, emergency responders that morning were dispatched in response to an apparent drug overdose but instead found Young with a fatal gunshot wound to her head. Authorities have released no public information regarding her death.
