Jon Davey, president of the RBF Dome NFP, speaks Tuesday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony commemorating the completion of the first phase of restoration work on the Fuller Dome Home at 407 S. Forest Ave. The dome, constructed in 1960 by renowned futurist and SIU professor R. Buckminster Fuller, fell into disrepair in recent years but was purchased in 2002 by SIU emeritus professor Bill Perk, a colleague of Fuller. The plan is to completely restore the home to its condition from the 1960s when Fuller, a noted advocate of the geodesic dome design, lived there with his wife. The second phase of the project will involve a total restoration of the interior, with a final goal of creating a museum celebrating Fuller’s life and work. ‘We still have a ways to go,’ Davey said.
