Methodist Men Pancake Breakfast takes place Saturday

The Chester United Methodist Men will host their annual pancake breakfast this Saturday, March 11 at the First United Methodist Church in Chester.

The event begins serving at 6:30 a.m. and will end at 11 a.m.

This year marks a special occasion for UMM because the church recently purchased a new commercial stove and state-of-the-art oven combination.

"We are very excited about using our new stove and hope it makes things run much smoother," said chief pancake chef Chris Jeffries. "The old unit was more than 50 years old. We purchased it way back when I was a little boy."

The men didn't want to attempt a  big event like the pancake breakfast to "try it out," so last week the men prepared and served breakfast for the entire congregation prior to the start of the Sunday morning church service.

"It was a dry run of sorts and we used the congregation as our guinea pigs or test cases that morning," said assistant chefs Steve Belcher and Jimmy Dean.

The menu for the event includes all-you-can-eat fare including hot, freshly-made pancakes, sausage, coffee, orange juice, and milk.

The cost for adults is only $6 per person. Children age 12-6 can eat for $3, while small children 5 and younger will be allowed to eat at no cost.

"We see this project as much of an outreach activity as we do a fundraiser," said former UMM President Bob Koenegstein. "We enjoy getting the community into our church and have great fellowship while we are serving and visiting with our customers."

Profits from the pancake breakfast will be used for various ministries as well as outreach projects.

Recently, the UMM made a donation to the "Kid's First" program at Chester Grade School. This child support effort is designed to assist needy children at CGS with various supplies throughout the entire school year.

The Methodist Men College Scholarship Program helps college-bound members of the church with the various expenses of associated with attending college.

The UMM will also help send kids to summer church camp this year as in the past. The profits from the breakfast will help kids with the expense of summer church camp and make camp possible for those kids in need.
