Faulty brakes causes Casey's accident

The Chester Police Department has released more information on the Monday accident at Casey's General Store in Chester, suspecting that faulty truck brakes caused the crash that destroyed the gas station's sign on the north end of its lot.

According to a news release from the CPD, 59-year-old Gregory Nuyt, of Perryville, had parked his 1998 Kenworth Gilster-Mary Lee semi cab in the 1100 block of State Street and went into the GML offices.

Upon his return, Nuyt discovered his truck at rest against the Casey's sign on the north end of the gas station lot at 1226 State Street. The CPD reported witnesses to the accident confirmed the truck was unoccupied at the time of impact.

The Chester Fire Department was also paged to the scene. Chester Fire Chief Marty Bert told the Herald Tribune the original report was a vehicle had struck the gas pumps with a guy slumped over the wheel.

"That's what the caller said," Bert said. "Thankfully, nobody got hurt. I've seen cars pop out of gear before at Rozier's and end up in the ditch behind our shop."

The CPD stated there were no injuries in the accident and no citations have been issued at this time.

"It could have been worse," Bert said. "Somebody could have been crossing the intersection (at Stacey Street) and gotten run over."
