Pedestrian killed on I-57 over holiday weekend

A holiday weekend accident involving pedestrians on I-57 left one person dead and a juvenile seriously injured.

Illinois State Police District 13 reports Amanda Beem, 22, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., was killed in a crash that occurred around 4:15 a.m. Saturday morning near milepost 90.5. A juvenile female, also of Port St. Lucie, sustained major injuries and was transported via ambulance to a regional hospital. Two others of Port St. Lucie were not injured.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the Floridians, traveling in a 2005 Ford Expedition, had been involved in a property damage-only crash and had exited their vehicle. At that point, , a 2016 International truck tractor semi driven by Robert Miller, 71, of Effingham struck Beem, who was standing in the roadway. The semi then struck the Ford Expedition.

Miller was uninjured, and police say there will be no charges. The northbound lanes of I-57 were closed for about five and a half hours for clean-up and investigation.
