Cairo man charged with cocaine possession after traffic stop

A 34-year-old Cairo man was cited with possession of a controlled substance after a traffic stop in Du Quoin on Saturday, according to a news release from the Du Quoin Police Department.

Carlus Davis, 34, was stopped by Du Quoin Officer Cale Bastien at 11:04 p.m. on Hickory Street at the intersection with Reed Street for an expired registration.

During the stop, Bastien noticed the smell of cannabis coming from the vehicle. He and other officers conducted a drug search that yielded 6.6 grams of cocaine.

Davis was taken to Perry County Jail, where he remained incarcerated as of Monday morning. Bond has not yet been set.
