Carbondale man killed on I-57 in Franklin County

A Carbondale man was killed Saturday night in a crash on Interstate 57 in Franklin County.

Illinois State Police District 13 reports that Charles W. Shy, 49, died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, which took place just before 11:30 p.m. Jan. 6 near southbound milepost 75.5.

The preliminary investigation concluded that Shy was driving in the southbound right lane of I-57 in a 2014 Volkswagen Passat. He struck the rear of a 2011 International truck tractor pulling a 2007 Great Dane semi trailer. The driver of the truck was identified as Saif H. Almuslmawi, 32, of Dearborn Heights, Mich. Almuslmawi was not injured. Police said the Volkswagen's failure to reduce speed caused the crash.
