One dead, one injured after shooting in Carbondale

One person is dead and another seriously injured after a shooting late Thursday evening at the edge of the SIU campus in Carbondale.

In a news release issued early Friday morning, Carbondale Police say officers responded around 11:26 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15 to a report of gunshots in the 400 block of East Mill Street. Their investigation led to the discovery of two gunshot victims, one of them fatally injured.

En route to the hospital, police say the second victim was involved in a traffic accident at the intersection of West Main Street and North Illinois Avenue. Additional, non-life-threatening injuries were reported as a result of the crash, and the gunshot victim later was transported to a St. Louis-area hospital.

Police say they are not yet identifying the victims, and they currently have no information on the suspect in the shootings. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police at 618-457-3200 or Crime Stoppers at 618-549-COPS.
