CARTERVILLE -- The John A. Logan Board of Trustees Tuesday appointed Jackson County businessman William Orrill to serve the remainder of Trustee Cheryl Graff's term. The vote was taken during the executive session of a special meeting called for this purpose.

Graff's resignation was announced during the regular March 27 meeting, and was "effective immediately." She cited the demands of her position as superintendent of schools for Alexander, Jackson, Perry, Pulaski and Union counties, which had made it "difficult to fulfill both roles with the time and focus that each deserves."

Orrill has an extensive business background. He was president of Morgan Commercial Structures for 14 years. He also served as president of the Southern Illinois Builders Association and currently serves as president of the board for the Therapy Center of Southern Illinois.

Orrill also served on the board of the Central Illinois Laborers' Pension Fund, as a member of the Governor's Biofuel Committee and as director of the Labor-Management Program (LIUNA) for the Midwest and Illinois for 14 years. He is currently a special international representative for LIUNA.

Orrill has served on the Illinois Teachers' Retirement System board of trustees, the Illinois Governor's Biofuel Committee and the John A. Logan College Advisory Board for the Construction Management Program. He has a long relationship with JALC, having assisted with the development of training programs and the development of a $56,000 scholarship endowment at the college in conjunction with E.T. Simonds Construction.

"I am very proud and honored to have been appointed to the John A. Logan College Board," Orrill said. "Logan is such a great asset for Southern Illinois, and I believe is one of the best community colleges in the Midwest, if not the country. I look forward to working with the board, administration, faculty and students," he said. "I believe I can draw on my experience and background to help the college move forward."

Graff was elected trustee in 2013 and would have been up for re-election in 2019. A Carbondale resident, Orrill was a candidate in the 2016 John A. Logan trustee election. He and Bob Ellis of West Frankfort were defeated by Mandy Little of West Frankfort and Rebecca Borgsmiller of Carterville for two six-year terms on the board.

Since Graff also served as the board's vice chairman, Chairman Bill Kilquist has appointed a

nominating committee. The election of a new vice chairman will be conducted at the next meeting.
