Lions Club expands downtown flag placement

On Veterans Day 2014, the Carbondale Lions Club placed 29 American flags for the first time on Main Street between Illinois Avenue and Washington Street.

Since then, Lions have placed these flags for four patriotic holidays each year: Memorial Day, Flag Day, the Fourth of July and Veterans Day.

This Memorial Day, the Lions Club placed an additional 38 American flags within the new Illinois Avenue streetscape project, the first portion of which was completed in August 2017.

Additional flags can be placed along Illinois Avenue when the current streetscape work is completed. Erection of the flags was a joint effort among the Lions Club, the city of Carbondale, Woodmen of the World Chapter 50 and Penn Aluminum Company of Murphysboro.
