Steeleville takes second in Wood Bat tourney

Steeleville American Senior Legion baseball won two of three during the annual Wood Bat tournament in Steeleville, earning them a second place finish for the event..

The opener on July 2 was a match up with Trenton. Scoreless after two innings, Steeleville got on the board in the third. After one out, Owen Gross and Dusty Sutton singled, stole second and third and Eli Wittenborn drew a walk. Ryan Vogt followed with a sacrifice fly to left scoring Gross putting Steeleville on top 1-0. That score would hold until Steeleville added two in the sixth and another pair in the seventh.

Vogt dominated on the mound, working 7 no hit, scoreless innings earning the 5-0 win. He struck out 13 and allowed one walk on the day. At the plate, Gross led Steeleville going 3 for 5 with a run scored and a stolen base. Dusty Sutton went 2 for 4 with a double and a stolen base. Steeleville improved to 11-1 on the season.

The second game for the Steeleville Senior Legion baseball team on July 4 was another battle with a tough Orient team. With two outs and nobody on in the first, Orient managed to scratch across a run on a single, and error and another base hit. That turned out to be the only run scored in the game. Steeleville did manage three hits and four walks in the game but could not put a run on the board, losing 1-0.

Bradley Mevert had a double and Jordan Wilson and Jacob Sutton each had a hit. Seth Parkinson worked six innings on the hill, allowing the one earned run on four hits, three walks, striking out six. Eli Wittenborn pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Steeleville dropped to 11-2 for the season.

Game three of the Steeleville Wood Bat tournament for the Steeleville Senior Legion was against Marion on July 6. Scoreless after two innings, Steeleville rallied for five in the third on one hit, three walks and error, sending 10 batters to the plate. They added three more in the fourth and two more in the fifth to cruise to 10-0 victory.

The Sutton brothers, Dusty and Jacob, each went 3 for 4. Dusty scored three runs and stole a base. Jacob had three RBI, scored three runs, doubled and stole a base. Bradley Mevert went 2 for 3 with three RBI, a double and a run scored. Jackson Hamilton also went 2 for 3 with a run scored. Owen Gross went 2 for 4 and scored twice. On the mound, Jordan Wilson tossed five scoreless innings, allowing three hits, one walk and struck out four.

Steeleville is 12-2 for the year.
