CARBONDALE -- John T. Shaw, Director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, will speak at the Southern Illinois Learning in Retirement meeting at 10:30 a. m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16. He will discuss his most recent book, "Rising Star, Setting Sun: Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and the Presidential Transition that Changed America."
A native of Peoria, Shaw received his bachelor's degree in political science from Knox College in Galesburg, and his master's in history from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.
After working for the governor of Illinois, he participated in a training program with the European Union in Brussels. He then moved into journalism with a position at The Wall Street Journal Europe. He spent over 20 years in Washington, covering Congress and writing for the Washington Diplomat.
He has been a guest on C-SPAN and the PBS News Hour and a Media Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford. "Rising Star, Setting Sun" is his fifth book.
The meeting, free and open to the public, will be held at Grace United Methodist Church located at 220 N. Tower Road in Carbondale. A coffee and social hour will begin at 9:30 a.m.
