W. Frankfort man hurt in crash on I-57

A 20-year-old West Frankfort man was transported to a regional hospital with major injuries last Wednesday morning following a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 57 at the Herrin/Johnston City exit.

According to a state police report, Dylan R. Fuene was northbound when his 2008 Toyota RAV4 failed to reduce speed and struck a semi from behind. Fuene's vehicle came to rest blocking both northbound lanes, leaving him trapped inside. Responding fire crews had to extricate Fuene from his vehicle. He was then flown via medical helicopter to a hospital.

The driver of the 2013 Volvo truck tractor, Juan Andres Machado, was uninjured. The 53-year-old from Naples, Fla., had stopped in traffic due to a lane reduction caused by roadway patching crews working there.

The accident occurred around 10:07 a.m. Both men were wearing their seat belts. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

No charges have yet been filed pending an investigation.
