Reception for ceramics show is tonight at Artspace 304

Carbondale Community Arts will present the inaugural "Plate & Platter" national juried ceramics exhibition at Artspace 304, in collaboration with Curator Stephanie Dukat and the SIU School of Art and Design Ceramics area.

This year is the first in a biennial national juried exhibition held at Carbondale Community Art's Artspace 304 that honors the long tradition of ceramic arts in southern Illinois. "Plate & Platter" seeks to educate artists and art appreciators in the region about contemporary ceramic art practices on a national level, revitalizing the tradition established by the former Carbondale Clay Cup biennial exhibition hosted at the SIU University Museum.

Juror Chandra DeBuse selected 40 works from 150 entries submitted by artists throughout the U.S. The exhibition will be on display through Feb. 22 at Artspace 304, located at 304 W. Walnut St., with a public reception from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25. DeBuse will give an artist lecture starting at 6 p.m., followed by exhibit award announcements and reception continuing until 7:30 p.m..

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, DeBuse will present a demonstration focusing on plate and platter construction and ceramic surface decoration. The workshop will occur at the SIU Ceramics Area Studios on the SIU campus in the Pulliam Hall Industrial Wing.

Both events are free and open to the public. Saturday's workshop is limited to 30 participants. Visit carbondalearts.org or call 618-457-5100 to register.
