The Carbondale Terriers boys basketball team will meet Cahokia tonight in one of the last four regular-season games of a great 2018-19 basketball season.
The Terriers are now 19-5 after splitting two South Seven contests -- winning 40-28 at Bowen Gym last Saturday against Mt. Vernon and losing 53-44 to Belleville Althoff on Tuesday.
"When you get hit in the mouth, you've got to get up and fight harder," Carbondale head coach Jim Miller said Tuesday. "We had five of our top seven guys cut in to playing hard -- but two others weren't."
The Terriers looked like they would run away with a win against Althoff, racing to a 17-5 first-quarter lead. But Althoff pushed the reset button midway in the second quarter and cut the deficit to three points (22-19 Carbondale at halftime).
From there it was all Belleville as they outscored the Terriers 20-9 through three quarters to take a 39-31 lead. That was it for the Terriers, who never got closer than five points thereafter.
On the other hand, Carbondale played its best game defensively of the year in the Saturday win against the Mt. Vernon Rams.
The talented Rams were held to no field goals and three points for the first two quarters of their loss to Carbondale. Incredibly, the Rams were shut out by the Terriers in the first quarter and had 12 turnovers.
The Terriers held the Rams shooters to eight of 31 from the field. The Terriers also out-rebounded the Rams 32 to 27.
Twelve of Carbondale's 32 caroms were offensive, giving them nine more shots at the Rams' basket in the game.
Carbondale's Fairleigh Ward led the Terriers with 15, and center Thomas Anderson had 11 rebounds.
