Henry claims second term as Carbondale mayor

Carbondale Mayor Mike Henry has claimed another term.

With 23 of 23 precincts reporting Tuesday night, the first-term mayor claimed victory over challenger Nathan Colombo, an activist, organizer and social media stalwart who would have been the youngest mayor in Carbondale's history.

Henry carried the election with 1,117 votes to Colombo's 907 for a winning margin of 55.19 percent. That's down significantly from the 1,622 Henry was elected with in 2015, when he ran against then-city councilwoman Jane Adams. Overall voter turnout was down accordingly in all city races compared with 2015, when the city last voted for mayor. Tuesday's results still must be certified.

All vote totals are considered unofficial until they have been canvassed.

Tuesday's election followed a last-minute surprise. On Saturday, police responded to an apparent domestic disturbance at Henry's home. According to a news release from the city, at around 11:45 p.m. March 30, two Carbondale police officers were on foot patrol when they heard a disturbance coming from a residence that was determined to be the mayor's home.

The investigation revealed a disturbance was occurring between the mayor and his wife. There were no arrests or charges filed, and there were no injuries requiring medical treatment. The investigation has been forwarded to the Jackson County States Attorney's Office.
