CCHS music students earn distinctions

This has been an outstanding spring for Carbondale Terriers music.

Several of Carbondale Community High School's musicians have achieved high success and recognition for their many hours of practice on their musical endeavors.

At "Jazz in the Meadows," senior David McEathron received recognition for outstanding (instrument) solo performance, and Leandru Martin received recognition for outstanding (instrument) solo performance as well.

CCHS Band, Strings and Piano, and Vocal Music received 72 first-place ratings at IHSA Solo and Ensemble Contest in March. Two students received Best of Day recognition for their solos as well: freshman Adelaide Garvey on clarinet and sophomore Darcy Conder on marimba.

Every year, the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra holds a pre-college concerto competition for their "Stars of Altgeld" concert. The 2019 winner was senior Emma Byrd, a clarinetist. She performed her solo alongside the orchestra April 2.

On April 26, 27 and 28, Southeastern Illinois College will be presenting "Aida," a musical written by Elton John and Tim Rice.

The title role, Aida, will be played and sung by CCHS junior Sena Ntumy.

All of these students will be performing with their respective CCHS ensembles Tuesday, April 30 in the CCHS Auditorium at the 2019 Fine Arts Night.
