CCHS student arrested after incident with gun on school bus

A Carbondale Community High School student is due in court later this month after an incident involving a weapon on a school bus last week.

Carbondale Police arrested Jekiary Anderson, 19, of Carbondale around 7:45 a.m. April 13 after an incident the previous day that caused CCHS to be placed on lockdown for the early part of the morning.

Police say that at around 7:30 a.m. Friday, April 12, officers were on foot patrol at the high school when they were notified about a disturbance that took place on a school bus in the 600 block of East College Street that was en route to the school. One of the suspects involved in the disturbance allegedly possessed a weapon and fled from the bus, never arriving at the school.

Carbondale officers and detectives responded to the school to begin the active investigation and learned that the disturbance involved known acquaintances who were involved in a dispute. When officers determined there was not a threat to students, faculty or staff, the school lockdown was lifted at approximately 9:10 a.m.

Police investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Anderson, ultimately apprehending him the next morning in the 1400 block of North Illinois Avenue. Anderson is incarcerated at the Jackson County Jail on a charge of unlawful use of a weapon and is due in court April 30 for a preliminary hearing.
