Du Quoin P.D. cracks down on distracted drivers

DU QUOIN - Due to the recent deaths of state troopers and the increase in squad car accidents, often the result of drivers using their cellphones while driving, the Du Quoin Police Department conducted traffic checks on April 16. Officers focused on distracted driving and failure to wear seat belts.

There were 54 traffic stops that resulted in 37 citations and 14 written warnings. Of those stops, 15 involved the illegal use of cellphones while driving; 10 for speeding; five seat belt violations; five for driving a motor vehicle with no valid insurance; two for driving a motor vehicle with an expired registration; one for disobeying a traffic control device; and one improper display or registration.

One individual was arrested on an outstanding warrant. Two were arrested on charges of driving with a suspended license.

"Please pay attention while driving ... buckle up, slow down, and move over for stopped emergency vehicles," said Du Quoin Police Chief Les Vancil. "We want everyone to arrive home safely."
