MARION -- Southern Illinoisans had the opportunity to witness some history earlier this week at Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois when

Carbondale Chapter 277 of the Experimental Aircraft Association hosted a tour of the 1945 World War II B-17 bomber, complete with pilots and crew.

"It was a good turnout. Southern Illinois supported us well," said EAA spokesman Scott Hartwig. "We were hoping that the people of this region would take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity to experience what it might have been like in 'Aluminum Overcast.' And they did. We took four planeloads of people up for rides and dozens more toured the bomber at ground level."

Airport manager Doug Kimmel was pleased, too.

"It's a privilege for the airport to host these spectacular aircraft from year to year," Kimmel said. "We thank Scott and the local EAA chapter for helping make it happen. The significant public interest and attendance these historical aircraft generate from across our region will surely keep us on the map for future stops and viewing opportunities."
