Police ID victim in collision

A freight train hit and killed a woman Monday evening in downtown Carbondale, cutting off much of the east-west traffic flow in the city.

Police say Beverly Carvell, 57, of Carbondale died as a result of the collision, which occurred around 6 p.m. Sept. 2 near the railroad crossing at Main Street.

Police do not suspect foul play.

Officers determined Carvell walked eastbound across the railroad tracks, and a northbound Canadian Northern freight train struck her. Authorities closed all track closings during the investigation, causing significant traffic congestion and detours.

Motorists were encouraged to use the Mill Street underpass and Pleasant Hill Road overpass.

Carbondale Police were assisted by the Carbondale Fire Department, the Carbondale Public Works Department, the SIU Police Department, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, the Canadian National Police Department, the Jackson County Ambulance Service and the Jackson County Coroner's Office.
