Ronald O. 'Ron' Giles, formerly of Benton

Ronald O. "Ron" Giles, 70, of Evansville, Ind., passed away peacefully at home Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, after a long battle with cancer.

Ronald was born March 3, 1947, in Herrin to Odell and Fern (Sweetin) Giles. He graduated from Benton Consolidated High School in 1965. Ron worked several years with his dad in Benton for Giles Refrigeration Service. Later, he worked in underground coal mining as a mechanic and electrician. He was a member of Local 1791 United Mine Workers and retired after 20 years from Amax Coal Company in Keensburg in 2003.

He loved his family and his church. He especially enjoyed taking cruises and traveling with his family and friends.

Ron is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Mary Ellen (Modglin) Giles of Evansville, Ind.; sons Randy Giles (Greta) of Sartell, Minn., Robert Giles (Tyanna) of Evansville and Richard Giles (Shannyn) of Crossville; sister Linda Bittner (Les) of Tell City, Ind.; grandchildren Calvin Giles, Heather Sparks (Tyler), Austin Giles (Victoria), Aleah Hanson (Spencer), Andrew Giles (Destiny), MaKayla Giles and Landon Giles; one great-granddaughter, Anilee Sparks; and several nieces and nephews.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8 at Bethel Pentecostal Church, 3421 Mesker Park Dr., Evansville, Ind. 47720, with Pastor Aaron Henson, Pastor Ted Totsch and Pastor Cecil Sullivan officiating. Burial will follow at Locust Hill Cemetery.

Friends may visit from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7 at Bethel Pentecostal Church and again from 10 a.m. until service time at the church Thursday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bethel Pentecostal Church for their building fund.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Mark Browning, Dr. James Jenison, and to all of the doctors and nurses who have taken care of him at Deaconess.
