Donald Castle of Carbondale

Donald Castle, 62, went to heaven on May 9, 2018.

Don was born Jan. 19, 1956, in Elgin to Eugene and Helen (Nelson) Castle.

He married Shirley Mayer July 28, 1990, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Steeleville. They had two daughters, Sarah Christine and Julia Elizabeth.

Don was a loving husband and wonderful father. He was a nature lover. His favorite teams were the Chicago Cubs and all things Salukis!

Don was an active member in his church, Our Savior Lutheran, serving as chairman of the board of elders and longtime member of the choir.

Don earned a bachelor degree in music vocals from Illinois State University. He earned a master's degree in college student personnel from Western Illinois University. Don worked many years with college student development and retired as associate director for student programs at the SIU Student Center in 2014. He returned to the university to organize events for the 2017 solar eclipse.

Grieving family include his wife; daughters Sarah (Blake) Morrison and Julia Castle; sisters Anne Castle and Kathryn Castle; brother William Castle; parents-in-law Maurice and Catherine Mayer; sister-in-law Judy (Leland) Wolters; nephew Luis Wolters; niece Lizzy (Robbie) Knop; and great-nephew Alex Knop.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and aunts Margaret Nelson and Alice (Carl) Carlson.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 12 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Carbondale with the funeral service at 6 p.m. at the church.

Remains will be scattered on Beasley Lake in Waupaca, Wis.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church. Walker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
