Candace Highsmith, formerly of Harrisburg

Candace Highsmith passed away and went to be with her Lord and Savior on Dec. 21, 2018. She joins her beloved husband, Marshall Highsmith, who passed away in 2010.

Candace was born in Harrisburg to Albert and Nellie Malone, both of whom preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were her in-laws, Ray and Evelyn Highsmith of Mount Vernon.

Surviving Candace is her son, Mark (Emily) Highsmith of San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Lori (Travis) Coates of Southlake, Texas and three grandchildren whom she adored and loved very much, Alexandra "Allie" Coates, Jackson Coates and Katherine "Kate" Coates, all of Southlake, Texas.

Also surviving are her sisters Alice (Vaughn) Hathaway of Charlotte, North Carolina and Connie (Larry) Angelly of Harrisburg.

Candace also had many aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces, all of whom she loved dearly.

Candace began playing piano at age 4, beginning a love of music that remained with her until she passed away.

She attended elementary and secondary schools in Harrisburg, and graduated with a bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. She married Marshall in June 1964.

At age 37, Candace had a stroke that took away the use of her left side, but she and her beloved husband managed to persevere through all the trials of life that came their way. Always remaining active in their church of First Baptist in San Antonio, they served by singing in the choir every Sunday.

Marshall and Candace also served by teaching second grade Sunday school, feeling that one of the most important things they could do in life was to teach children about God's wonderful love and Jesus as their Savior through lessons, crafts and singing.

After Marshall passed away, Candace moved to Southlake, Texas to be closer to her grandchildren. She spent her remaining years spending time with them and still playing on Sunday for her church service until she was no longer physically able to do so.

The family would specifically like to thank the church family at First Baptist Church for their love, friendship and support to both Marshall and Candace.

Services for Candace Highsmith will begin at noon, Wednesday, Jan. 2 at First Baptist Church, Wilson Chapel, 515 McCullough, in San Antonio.

An interment service will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Gifts of love can be given to the Television Ministry, Music Ministry or Children's Ministry at First Baptist Church, 515 McCullough, San Antonio, TX 78215.
