Bruce Wayne Summers of Du Quoin

Bruce Wayne Summers, 71, of Du Quoin, passed away at 6:07 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2019 at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Bruce was an educator at Chester Mental Health. He attended Bethel Lutheran Church in Du Quoin. He was a Du Quoin High School graduate and received his bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University.

Bruce joined the Du Quoin Lions Club in 1970. He served as president in 1975 and was secretary/treasurer from 1980 until the time of his death. He joined Lions Club District 1-CS Cabinet in 1980, and served as District Governor for Lions Club District 1-CS from 1996 until 1997. Bruce also served as District Trustee for the Lions of Illinois Foundation for five years and during the fifth year, he was president of the board. He was also a Sustaining Supporter and a Foundation Fellow Laureate.

Bruce was a board member of the National Association of Lions Club Foundations.

Locally, he was a member of the Western Egyptian Board for more than 30 years and was the board treasurer at the time of his death.

Bruce was a member of the Du Quoin Youth Club Board for more than 30 years and was the board treasurer at the time of his death. He was a 45-year member of the Du Quoin Elks. Bruce also served on the Gold Plate board of directors for a couple of years.

He was born Dec. 20, 1947 at Walla Walla, Washington, the son of Robert E. and Lois V. (Baxter) Summers.

He married Brenda Kay Hemmer on June 12, 1969 at Du Quoin, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 5, 1994.

Bruce is survived by four children, Amy (Kevin) Atteberry of Du Quoin, Craig (Alice) Summers of Brookfield, Wisconsin, Ryan (JoC) Summers of Pinckneyville, and Brooke (Nick) Ramsey of Pinckneyville; special friend, Betty Roethe of Du Quoin; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and twin brother, Rob.

Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Du Quoin, with the Rev. Alan Kornacki officiating.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 29 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin; and again from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the church.

Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Du Quoin.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make memorials to the Du Quoin Youth Club, Du Quoin Gold Plate, Bethel Lutheran Church, or an organization of their choice. These will be accepted at the funeral home.
