Gilbert G. “Gib” McMath of Chester

Gilbert G. "Gib" McMath, 73, of Chester, Illinois, passed away at 9:53 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2020 at his residence.

He was born to the late James A. and Lucy (nee Kerkhover) McMath on Oct. 7, 1946 in Murphysboro.

Gib married Sharon Niemeyer on Dec. 13, 1969 at St. Mary's Church of Divine Maternity in Ellis Grove.

He retired as a Transportation Officer for the Chester Mental Health Center, where he worked for 31 years.

Gib was a member of St. Mary's Church of Divine Maternity in Ellis Grove. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #72 in Chester and the Randolph County Rod and Gun Club. Gib enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, woodworking and working on his 1966 Corvette.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon McMath of Chester; three children, Dennis McMath of Chester, Brian (Ashley) McMath of Chester and Sherry (Scott) Carnahan of Ellis Grove; four siblings, Hilda Diercks of Chester, Oscar "Blacky" McMath of Steeleville, Ramona Lolan of Red Bud and Juanita (Roman) Bleem of Preston; six grandchildren, Patrick McMath, Amber Carnahan, Alexis McMath, Mason Carnahan, Jesse McMath and Zoe Carnahan, with one grandchild due in September; and many nieces and nephews.

Gib was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Cleo Shemonic; and five brothers, Rudy Pahich, Hobart McMath, James McMath, Roger McMath and Wilbert "Bill" McMath.

A private graveside service will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, officiated by Deacon Al DuBois. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Memorials contributions can be made in Gib's memory to Hospice of Southern Illinois or the Senior Companion Program, and are being accepted at the Pechacek Funeral Homes in Chester.
