Sadi Maynor owns Maynor Farms and is married with two children.
Q. What prompted you to start your business?
I have a passion for growing stuff and cooking. I have had a huge garden of my own since I was 18, and since then I have just kept on expanding every year. I actually started about 2½ years ago; my shop, however, opened a month ago. This has been a lifelong dream. I put in, on average, 14 hour days 7 days a week. But I am so thankful I have a supportive husband and kids. I love to care for people, so what better way to care for people than to feed them awesome organic food. I feel like what I'm doing is what God is putting my heart to do. So, I work hard, and hope that people can taste that.
Q. Are all of your products locally grown?
Everything I have is local. I either create it myself or I try to find the best, most different things I can offer to people around here. We even have different meats: bison, pork, beef and lamb. My eggs are from my own chickens, and they're free-range chickens. I started out actually making candles. I have a shop at my home, so I do the beeswax candles and lotion too. I do sell to outside businesses and restaurants as well.
Q. What are microgreens and why should I eat them?
They are greens that have up to 400 times the nutrition value of the full-size plant. They will give you a ton of energy. I snack on them all day long. They're great to put in smoothies, protein shakes, or just about anything. I grow 23 different microgreens. I try to do things more naturally -- I use non-GMO organic seeds, and I grow hydroponically, which means I only use filtered-out water and I don't use any soil or chemicals. All I grow with is water and an organic coconut pad. I actually grow the microgreens at my shop, so all of my plants are alive; it's basically like buying a house plant.
Q. What should people know about your business?
I'm just hoping to educate the people around here. Each week I'm trying to add new and exciting stuff. Eventually, I'm going to start cooking for this area. I am also known, not only for my gardening skills, but for my cooking; kids, cooking, and gardening that's my thing. I do fresh breads, candies, and cookies, but next month I plan on offering "Healthy Take-and-Bakes" as well as "Southern Take-and-Bakes."
