Du Quoin girls go 1-2 at Lebanon tournament

LEBANON - The Du Quoin High School girls' basketball team finished with one win in three tries at the Lebanon Holiday Tournament this week.

The Indians opened with a win Tuesday over Red Bud, 54-42.

In that game, Chloe Hill erupted for 20 points, which included six made baskets from beyond the three-point arc.

Grace Haney followed with 13 points. Also reaching double figures was Bailey Harsy with 10. Others scoring points were: Katie Smith-6, Meryn Gross-3 and Morgan Bullar-2.

As a team, the Tribe knocked down a season-best 10 triples.

"I thought our girls did a great job of frustrating Red Bud's top scorer, Sophie Richards. She still got her 19 points, but she had to work hard for every point she got," said Du Quoin head coach Shawn File. "We didn't allow them to make a single 3-pointer on the night."

The Indians led 14-10 after one period; 34-25 at the half and 46-30 after three periods.

On Wednesday, the Indians took it on the chin against a much bigger Freeburg team - bigger in terms of school enrollment (Class 3A) and physical size.

"We just couldn't match up with them very well," File said. "They're 7-3 and their losses have come against the likes of Breese Central, Lebanon and Troy Triad. They're a good ballclub."

Du Quoin was led in scoring by Smith's nine points. Haney checked in with seven. Harsy and Hill totaled six each. Delaynie Dearmond dropped in four and Bullar added two.

The Tribe trailed 16-8 after one quarter; 31-16 at the half and 45-23 after three quarters.

On Thursday, the Indians bowed out of the tourney with a 52-30 setback against Christ Our Rock Lutheran High School in Centralia.

"We played a very good first quarter, handled their press and led 14-8, but when they took off the press, we struggled to score in the half-court game," File said.

Bullar paced the Du Quoin offense with 10 points. Harsy netted five as did Hill. Smith and Haney accounted for three points each. Gross had two. Olivia Whitley and Alyiah Waters finished with one point apiece.

DHS trailed 25-21 at the half and 43-24 after three periods. The Indians now stand 7-8 overall.
