MT. VERNON -- Savannah Childers poured in 23 points on her own Senior Night to lead the Mt. Vernon High School girls basketball team to a 63-56 double-overtime win over Marion in a South Seven Conference game Thursday night at the new Changnon Gymnasium.

Marion is now 12-12 overall and 1-7 in the South Seven with the lone win coming over the same Lady Rams back on Dec. 1.

Mt. Vernon is now 6-18 and 1-8 in the conference.

The Lady Wildcats trailed 14-4 after one quarter and battled back from 13-point deficits in both the second and third periods. It was 23-16 at halftime after once being 22-9 and it was 37-30 going into the fourth quarter after being 33-20 following five straight points from Childers.

Marion inched closer and pulled within three at 39-36 with 4:35 remaining in regulation after Jasa Bell scored and was fouled but missed the free throw. Abby Bayer got the rebound and was also fouled and made both to make it a three-point game.

A free throw by Cassandra Woods and a jumper by Daishen Wolaver whittled it to one and Woods tied it at 41 with 19 seconds left, only to see Mt. Vernon's Lazhauria Williams score with six ticks remaining.

Lauryn Kadela inbounded the ball to Bayer and she drove down the right side and found Bell under the basket, where she drew a foul with 0.2 on the clock. Bell made both free throws to force the first overtime.

Another pair of free throws by Bell gave Marion its first lead since the opening minutes, but the Lady Rams went ahead by seven at 52-45 with 1:07 left after Childers nailed a 3-pointer and Williams hit a pair of free throws.

Bayer then hit a 3-pointer and Kadela hit two treys to give Marion the lead at 54-53, but Williams was fouled and split free throws with 11.6 left. Marion also turned over the ball but Mt. Vernon's only shot was a long heave and the game went to a second overtime.

Annibelle Harrison hit a 3-pointer to put Mt. Vernon ahead and Williams capped it with a layup on an inbounds play as the Lady Rams dominated the 2OT period.

Harrison, a sophomore, had 17 points and Williams finished with 15 for the Lady Rams.

Bayer led Marion with 17 points, while Bell had 14. Kadela had nine and Woods added seven.

Marion plays three home games in four nights next week with visits from Centralia (Monday), Herrin (Tuesday) and Carbondale (Thursday) to finish out the regular season.

The Lady Wildcats will then enter the IHSA's Class 3A postseason and begin at the Carterville Regional.
