Marion advances four from wrestling regional

MATTOON -- The Marion High School wrestling team is sending four representatives to the Lincoln 2A Sectional after advancing from the Mattoon Regional on Saturday.

Gaige Owens was the Wildcats' lone regional champion as the sophomore won the 113-pound weight bracket and is now 32-5 this season.

Owens pinned Carbondale's Jackson Beaupre in the quarterfinals and defeated Mt. Zion's Connor Morgeson by technical fall in the semifinals. In the finals, he edged Charleston's Trey Pearcy, 9-8, to win the title.

Rohan Cook (170) and Michael Cantrell (195) both placed second and River Flute (160) took third to become sectional qualifiers.

Cook defeated Mattoon's Michael Brown in the quarterfinals and pinned Centralia's Adam Mueller in the semifinals but was pinned by Mt. Zion's Ryder Marshall in the finals.

Cantrell received a quarterfinal by and pinned Mt. Vernon's Bill Penrod in just 22 seconds in the semifinals, but lost a 9-4 decision against Olney's Kyle Beasley in the finals.

Flute also received a quarterfinal bye, then lost in the semifinals to Carbondale's Nolan Beck by a slim 8-7 score, then bounced back to beat Mattoon's Logan Retzer with a quick pin in the consolation semifinals. In the third-place match, Flute won an 11-2 major decision against Olney's Hunter Summitt to advance.

Placing fourth were Gage Kent (106) and Lydell Hoskins (120). Kent won in the quarterfinals but lost in the semifinals and third-place match after winning a consolation bout. Hoskins received a quarterfinal bye, lost in the semifinals, won a consolation match and then lost to Carbondale's Donnelle Watson, 6-2, in the third-place match.

Landon White (132), Daniel Gilley (145), Michael Cerv (182), Tyler Teal (220) and JoeAbe Eroh (285) all lost both of their matches. Kaden Barber (126) won a consolation bout but didn't advance to the third-place match.
