Volunteers cruise past Southeastern Illinois

HARRISBURG - There was no letdown by the John A. Logan College men's basketball team against a struggling opponent Saturday afternoon.

The Volunteers eased past Southeastern Illinois, 105-62, to reach the 20-win plateau for the fifth consecutive season, while the Falcons fell to 1-19 and 0-12 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference.

Logan (20-4, 10-3) jumped out to a 17-5 lead and went into the break with a 48-23 lead and pushed the lead to 40 quickly in the second half and reserves played most of the stanza.

That allowed Jonah Jackson to put in 23 points and bump his average up to 8.1 points per game. Logan has six other players averaging in double figures.

Derek Hawthorne Jr. had 20 points and Vonnie Peterson put in 12 against SIC. David Sloan, the NJCAA Division I leader in assists at 9.5 per game, had five points, 10 assists and seven rebounds.

Jaiveon Eaves, who leads the Vols in scoring with a 16.8 average, had nine points. Antwan Campbell added eight points and seven rebounds and both Quamain Nelson and Damion Taylor had six points.

Marion's Justin Shadowens had two points, seven assists, five rebounds and three steals. Both points came from the foul line.

His former teammate, Sam Swinford, had six points for SIC. Carbondale's Winslow Martin led the Falcons with 26 points.

Logan, which has won seven straight, is averaging 97.3 points per game as a team.

In the early game, the JALC women moved into second place in the GRAC with a 77-56 victory over the Lady Falcons.

Logan is now 16-7 overall and 9-4 in the conference. SIC dropped to 11-11 and 8-4.

The Lady Vols led 35-29 at halftime and outscored SIC 25-12 in the third quarter to pull away.

Six players reached double figures for Logan led by Shaniya Whitsell's 14 points. Destiny Cozart had 13. Carbondale products Kaili Bacon (12) and Skylar Miller (10) both reached the mark and both Alicia Hornbuckle and Miriah Donelson added 10 points each.

Raven Brown led SIC with 16 points.

Logan's squads travel to Vincennes on Wednesday night.
