CARTERVILLE -- The John A. Logan College baseball team won four of its five games over the weekend and now has a 10-4 record going into the Great Rivers Athletic Conference portion of the schedule.

The weekend started Friday and the Volunteers defeated Kankakee, 11-1, before winning three of four against Triton over the following two days.

Kankakee was last spring's NJCAA Division II national champion and the Vols pounded out 10 hits and won in shortgame fashion. Cameron Touchette and A.J. Lewis both drove in three runs and Jack Wilson had three hits to back up pitcher Trey Riley, who struck out eight and gave up one hit in five innings.

Tanner Gordon started for the Vols in the opener against Triton and pitched six innings. He allowed two unearned runs, three hits and struck out 11 batters. Collin Clayton led the offense with three hits as Logan won, 7-2.

The lone loss of the weekend followed as Triton won 9-0 in the second game.

On Sunday, the Vols swept a doubleheader, 9-3 and 6-3, behind strong pitching performances from Brenden Heiss and Hunter Sullivan.

Heiss (2-0) went five innings in the first game and struck out 11 while giving up one earned run and one hit. Keegan Breese and Touchette both had two hits and Jeremy Gaines knocked in a pair of runs.

Sullivan pitched six innings in the second game and gave up three runs -- one earned -- and struck out eight batters. Gaines collected two hits and scored twice, while Clayton and Ashton Creal both drove in two runs.

Adison Wildharber picked up his second save in the nightcap as well.

Logan opens GRAC play at home Thursday against Wabash Valley College with a 2 p.m. start.

The JALC softball team also picked up two wins Saturday as it opened GRAC play with a sweep at Southeastern Illinois, 13-2 and 12-0.

Sydney Levan and Bailey Anderson were the winning pitchers. Taylor Rogers and Mikayla Chamness both homered for the Lady Vols.
