Indians take drubbing but fight for win over Carlyle

DU QUOIN - Alex Zimmerman's redemptive double in the bottom of the seventh lifted the Du Quoin High School baseball team to a 7-6 walkoff win over Carlyle on Wednesday.

Zimmerman made a wild throw to allow Carlyle to tie the game in the top of the seventh, but not only made a strong play to end the frame and keep it tied, but smacked the game-winning hit to deep left field.

That came after Will Woodside worked a one-out walk and Ryan Myers hit a bloop to right field that was initially caught and dropped. Kyle Donoghue was up next and struck out, but Zimmerman plated the winning run.

Ashton Smith, who was on deck for Zimmerman's hit, had three hits and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth on a wild pitch after a double and steal of third.

Brian Winters and Myers both had two hits for the Indians, who snapped a four-game losing skid and improved to 16-11 with the win.

On Tuesday, Tanner Bergmann hit three home runs to lead Nashville to a 10-0 six-inning rout of Du Quoin and clinch a share of the SIRR Mississippi Division championship.

Jacob Woodrome pitched a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and Bergmann finished with six RBIs for the Hornets.

Bergmann's first blast gave Nashville a 2-0 lead in the third, then Cole Malawy hit an RBI single before Bergmann went deep again to make it 5-0 in the fourth.

Malawy drove in another run and Gavin Baldwin and Patrick Combs also plated runs for Nashville.

Woodrome, meanwhile, needed just 61 pitches to throw a shutout against the Indians, who were coming off an extra-inning home loss to Murphysboro.

In that game, Murphysboro plate two runs in the seventh and three in the ninth to win 6-5 and pick up the Red Devils' fifth win of the season. Winters and Hank Stewart both had two hits and Tevin Lee homered for Du Quoin.
