Marion soccer team advances to regional championship

EFFINGHAM -- The Marion High School boys soccer team advanced to the championship of the Effingham 2A Regional with a 3-1 victory over Olney Richland County in the semifinals Tuesday.

Hamzah Baker scored Marion's first goal on an assist from Braden Dalton, then Tyson Stoecklin scored on an assist from Baker to put the Wildcats up 2-0 going into halftime.

Zachary Underwood upped the lead with a goal from a free kick just outside the 18-yard box in the second half.

Richland County's Seth Ingram scored shortly after with 8:15 remaining, but the Wildcats held their two-goal lead the rest of the way.

Camden Dodds was in goal for the Wildcats and made eight saves.

Marion (9-8-3) now advances to Saturday's title match against Effingham or Carterville-Herrin. That match is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.

Effingham and Carterville-Herrin play in the other semifinal match on Wednesday.
