Du Quoin girls roll past Johnston City to open season

DU QUOIN - The Du Quoin High School girls basketball team hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter Monday and rolled to a 44-23 win over Johnston City on the first night of the Du Quoin Tip-Off Classic at Anders Gymnasium.

Chloe Hill, Meryn Gross and Elizabeth Bird all bombed in treys in the opening minutes as Du Quoin took a 14-7 lead into the second quarter.

Bird had seven total points in the first period and finished with a game-high 15.

Hill knocked down another 3-pointer and Bird had four more points in the second period to help Du Quoin go on an 11-4 run and take a 25-11 lead into halftime.

Gross and Hill again connected from long range in the third quarter as Du Quoin extended its lead to 37-18.

Freshman Abbi Mocaby gave the host Lady Indians their seventh triple in the fourth quarter.

Bird was Du Quoin's only player in double figures. Hill finished with nine, while Gross and Katie Smith both had six. Morgan Bullar and Mocaby chipped in three and Delaynie Dearmond had two free throws in the win.

The tournament resumes Wednesday with Du Quoin facing Murphysboro after Christopher plays Johnston City at 6 p.m.
