Panthers win title at Carlyle tournament

CARLYLE - Dawson Yates dropped in 26 points to lead Pinckneyville High School's boys basketball team to a 67-46 win over Woodlawn on Saturday night in the championship game of the Carlyle Kaskaskian Classic.

Woodlawn jumped out to a 12-5 lead, but Pinckneyville went on a 12-0 run that allowed for a 14-12 lead at the first quarter break and a 27-23 lead at halftime.

The Panthers scored the second half with 10 straight points and never let the Cardinals within single digits the rest of the way.

Yates, who had 11 of his points in the second quarter, hit five 3-pointers and was 7 of 7 from the foul line.

Yates and teammate Dylan Houghland were named to the all-tournament team. Houghland had five points against Woodlawn.

Grant Tanner added 14 points in the title game, with eight coming in the opening minutes.

Ben Restoff had nine points, all in the fourth quarter, and Dre Scott chipped in eight for the Panthers, who were 18 of 21 as a team from the charity stripe.

Pinckneyville plays at Sparta on Friday.
