Lady Indians cruise past Sparta

DU QUOIN - This one escalated quickly.

The Du Quoin High School girls basketball team was trailing Sparta after four minutes of play but scored 25 straight points and blasted the Lady Bulldogs, 55-22, in an SIRR Mississippi Division game Tuesday night in the DHS Auxiliary Gym.

Du Quoin improved to 5-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference with the victory.

Sparta was ahead 5-4 after Mirahje Hudson scored on an inbounds play.

Du Quoin's huge run started with 3-pointers from Delaynie Dearmond and Bailey Harsy, then baskets from Lauren Heape and Katie Smith after a Sparta timeout.

A free throw by Morgan Bullar gave Du Quoin a 21-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Chloe Hill's triple with 5:44 left in the half capped the 25-0 run by the Lady Indians.

A basket from Damojia Lowery snapped the drought for Sparta, but a free throw from smith and a 3-pointer by Meryn Gross pushed the lead to 33-8.

Sparta reached double figures just before halftime on a shot from Shawna Smith.

The margin reached 30 quickly in the third with baskets from Hill, Smith and Dearmond. A pair of freshmen, Heape and Ayanna Dunklin, both added two buckets before the period ended with Du Quoin leading 50-16.

Maddie Robison tossed in five quick points in the fourth quarter which was played with a running clock.

Dearmond led the Lady Indians with 11 points and Hill also hit double figures with 10. Heape and Smith both had eight.

Du Quoin was scheduled to host Anna-Jonesboro on Thursday and plays at Marion in a matinee Saturday.
