Pinckneyville girls rally for win over Du Quoin

DU QUOIN - The Lady Indians had the better start, but the Lady Panthers had the best finish.

The Du Quoin High School girls basketball team pulled a stunner by holding Pinckneyville scoreless for nine minutes Tuesday night, but Pinckneyville eventually took the lead and won 40-32 in their SIRR Mississippi Division matchup.

Pinckneyville improved to 15-9 overall and 4-3 in the conference, while Du Quoin dropped to 7-16 and 1-6.

Du Quoin led 11-0 after the first quarter.

In those opening minutes, the Lady Indians got baskets from Chloe Hill, Elizabeth Bird, Delaynie Dearmond and Morgan Bullar and three free throws from Katie Smith.

Pinckneyville didn't get on the board until Bella Pasquino's steal and layup made it 11-2 with 6:05 left in the first half.

Payton Morgan scored six of her game-high 15 points in the second quarter, but with just one field goal and going 4-of-8 from the line.

The Lady Indians went into halftime with a 16-8 lead after Dearmond put in a 12-footer to beat the scoreboard buzzer.

Pinckneyville got buckets from five players - Elaine Shaneyfelt, Megan Breslin, Pasquino, Morgan and Lily Tanner - in the third quarter and pulled to within 22-21 at the final break.

Breslin, who tallied nine points, made a free throw with 7:34 left that tied the game at 22, then after missing the second toss, Morgan got the rebound and put in a stickback to give Pinckneyville its first lead of the night.

Bailey Harsy hit a 3-pointer to give Du Quoin the lead back briefly, but the Lady Panthers went on a 16-5 run after that to close the game. Harsy led Du Quoin with eight points.

Morgan scored seven points in the final frame and Tanner had six of her eight in that stretch. Pinckneyville won despite going 13 of 31 from the foul line.

Both teams are scheduled for conference games Thursday. Du Quoin then returns to action Tuesday at Anna-Jonesboro; on the same night Pinckneyville travels to Nashville.
