Boys track team places 5th at Ste. Genevieve

The Chester High School Boys Track and Field athletes traveled to Ste. Genevieve, Missouri Monday April 1 for the Old Settlement Invitational and to Freeburg Monday April 8 for the 2019 Freeburg Boys Invite.

At Ste. Genevieve the hometown boys were the winners with 143 points. They were followed by Fredericktown (134.66); Notre Dame of Girardeau (126), Valle Catholic (128); Chester (71.83); Saxony Lutheran (61); Dexter (48.50); Perryville (14); and West County (10).

Chester was led by Keith Kiner III and Aiden Jany, who each recorded a runner-up finish and a 3rd place finish. Kiner finished 2nd in the triple jump with a leap of 42-1 and 3rd in the long jump with 19-5.75.

Jany finished 2nd in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.49 and 3rd in the 100-meter dash with 11.71. Jany also finished 4th in the 400-meter dash (53.34). Gage Garniss had a 4th place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (16.29).

The Jackets recorded five 5th place finishes including Kiner, Trent Bierman, Garniss, Matt Korando and the 400-meter relay team.

Kiner placed 5th in the 400 dash with a time of 56.14. Bierman was 5th in 3200-meter (1-mile) run (11:43.93). Garniss finished 5th in the 300 hurdles (44.88); and Korando was 5th in the high jump with his leap of 5-8.

Jacob O'Riley, Caleb Parker, Matt Korando, and Justin Clendenin had a time of 49.82 in the 4 X 100-meter relay.

Jacob Cowell had a 6th place finish in the pole vault with his vault of 8-0. Freshman Avery Carpenter finished 6th in the 110 hurdles with a time of 20.82. In the 4 X 400 relay Jacob O'Riley, Colin Wingerter, Keith Kiner III and Gage Garniss turned in a time of 4:00.20 to finish 6th.

Chester's only 7th place finish was in the 4 X 800-meter relay. Jacob Cowell, Chris Schwier, Nathan Fricke, and Freddie Alvarez recorded a time of 10.57. 51 in their 7th place performance.

The Yellow Jackets turned in four 8th place finishes including Caleb Parker and Colin Wingerter who each had a pair of 8th awards apiece. Parker finished 8th in the 100 dash (12.28) and the 200 dash (25.54). Wingerter finished 8th in the high jump (5-4) and the triple jump (36-8.5). Tyler Holm threw the shot put 34-11.5 to finish 9th.

Five Yellow Jackets recorded 10th place finishes including Nate Fricke, Trent Bierman, Connor Wolff, Justin Clendenin, and Tyler Holm. Fricke was 10th in the 800 run (2:36.17). Bierman was 10th in the 1600-meter (1-mile) run (5:27.86). Wolff was 10th in the 300-meter hurdles (53.64). Clendenin finished 10th in the long jump (15-9.5). Holm was 10th in the discus throw with his toss of 88-2.

In the javelin throw Justin Clendenin placed 13th (80-2) and Tyler Holm finished 15th (67-7). The javelin event is not featured at most of the meets that the Jackets attend.

<b>FREEBURG INVITATIONAL</b>

Mascoutah was the champion with 140.5 points, followed by Freeburg (133); Granite City (83); Columbia (74); Breese Central (40); Chester (38); Belleville East (23.5); and Christ Our Rock Lutheran (22).

The Freeburg Invitational was an 8-team event wand most of the schools are bigger than Chester. Keith Kiner III was Chester's leading point-getter, with two championships, a 4th place finish and a 6th place finish for a total of 25 individual points.

Kiner won the triple jump with a leap of 42-09.5 which was 8.5 inches better than his seeded distance of 42-01.00 (10 points). He also won the 400 middle distance event with a time of 52.04 which was 30 seconds better than his predicted time of 52.34 (10 points). Keith also placed 4th in the 200-meter dash (23.45) (4 points) and 6th in the long jump (19-08.25) (1 point).

Aiden Jany, a promising freshman, earned eight points for his 52.07 runner-up finish in the 400-meter dash. Jany and Kiner teamed up to take the top two spots in the 400.

The Yellow Jacket junior varsity 4 X 400-meter relay team of Gage Garniss, Matt Korando, Nate Fricke and Justin Clendenin was runner-up with a time of 4:04.85. (No points were awarded for JV events). The CHS 4 X 800 junior varsity relay team of Freddie Alvarez, Nate Fricke, Connor Wolff and Jordan Hughes finished 3rd with a time of 10:22.48.

Chester's Trent Bierman earned two points for the team total by placing 5th in the 3,200-meter (2-mile) run with his time of 11:36.57. His seeded time was estimated at 12:21.24.

Chester's Aiden Jany's 6th place finish in the 100-meter dash earned the Jackets one point with his time of 11.90. Jany's seeded time was 11.54. Jany also earned the Jackets two points for his 5th place finish in the 200 with his 23.94 performance.
