Wrestling Terriers prepare for regionals

The CCHS Wrestling Terriers participated in the South Seven Conference meet Jan. 24 and 25.

The Terriers opened the meet with competition against Marion on Friday. In a tough battle with each team winning five matches (and two forfeits each), Carbondale lost 41-42 on points. Four of the five Carbondale wins were with falls - Gabe Kristiansen (113) 2:00, Haytham Alshammari (120) :22, Luke Daly (170) :40 and Aiden Taylor (220) :12. Omar Nasar (182) collected the fifth win with a technical fall 21-6, 5:30.

The Terriers traveled to Mt. Vernon the next day for the remaining five dual meets for the conference championship. The Terriers tied for third with a 3-2 record, soundly beating Mt. Vernon 56-21 and Centralia 66-6. They had a win by criteria over Cahokia (39-39) and another close loss to Belleville Althoff, 30-33.

Overall, seven CCHS wrestlers received South Seven All-Conference honors. Three Terriers, Aron Taylor (160), Luke Daly (170) and Aiden Taylor (195), went undefeated in all five duals and were named to the first team selections. Gabe Kristiansen (106), Haythem Alshammari (113), Dominic Groves (145) and Omar Nasar (182) were named to the second team selections.

The conference meet ends the Terriers' regular season, and they travel to Mattoon Feb. 8 for the IHSA postseason regional meet.
