Fire burns on West Park Street; no one injured

City firefighters on Thursday quickly subdued a fire at a vacant structure in Du Quoin.

Fire trucks were on scene shortly after 1:30 p.m. in the 400 block of West Park Street, where flames had consumed a small structure. No one was inside.

Du Quoin Fire Chief Bob Shaw said it appeared efforts to clean up surrounding property had resulted in fire spreading to the structure. Even after firefighters contained the structure fire, flames continued to burn on a large adjacent brush pile.

Shaw said dry conditions likely contributed to the fire's spread.
