Food, fashion to be celebrated with week full of events

SIU students and the town of Carbondale are planning a fun-filled week dedicated to food and fashion.

Carbondale Food and Fashion Week will run from April 23 to 27. The week will feature a range of different events aiming to bring awareness to some of the programs offered at SIU. Students from the Hospitality and Tourism Administration and Advertising Program have developed the concept and are executing the week-long event.

The week-long event starts April 23 with an opening ceremony followed by the showing of "Kinky Boots" at Shryock Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. This event will feature an opening statement from leaders in the Carbondale community.

The Food and Art Crawl will be April 24 in downtown Carbondale. The city of Carbondale, Carbondale Main Street and the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce have partnered to put on the event. Carbondale's various restaurants and local art will be featured. Local artists will be displayed in the local downtown restaurants. The community will tour local restaurants and experience a diverse selection of food and art.

On Friday, April 26, the SIU Career Development Center will present "Dress for Success on a Dime." The workshop will run from 10:20 to 11:10 a.m. and 12:30 to 1:20 p.m. in Faner Hall room 1006. The demonstration will show students how to dress professionally on a limited budget.

The last event of the week, the Passion for Fashion Gala, will take place Saturday, April 27 at the Garden Grove Event Center 1215 E. Walnut St. The theme of the gala is to celebrate 150 years of Carbondale fashion. The reception starts at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by a dinner, catered by Garden Grove, and a silent auction. There will be a wide variety of items up for auction. Tickets for the event are $45 per person or $315 for a table of eight. Student tickets are $35 per person. Proceeds from the event will fund a student scholarship. There will be a vintage fashion show that has articles of clothing from nearly every decade. Everyone who attends the event will be encouraged to wear vintage, or vintage-inspired, attire.
