Sparta soldier marks anniversary of WWI battle
The first time Illinois soldiers fought in France during World War I, it sparked a military partnership that has lasted for the past century. One hundred years later, Illinois National Guard leaders and soldiers traveled back to northern France to mark the centennial anniversary of the Battle of Hamel.

Large crowd enjoys Kaskaskia Patriotic Ceremony
It was the 49th year for the annual Patriotic Ceremony "Let Freedom Ring" hosted on Kaskaskia Island on the 4th of July. Organizers had a full slate of speakers and activities this year as the weather man had a very hot, humid and sunny day awaiting the hundreds of guests to the Island.

Local students make McKendree University president's, dean's lists
McKendree University announced a number of local students were on the college's president's list for achieving a perfect 4.0 grade-point average for the spring 2018 semester, as well as the dean's list for earning a grade-point average of 3.60 or higher for the spring 2018 semester
