College Report

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[A steal is a steal is a steal. Unless, of course, that steal is an offensive rebound.

Though distinctly separate in your local basketball boxscore, the end result of both an offensive board and a steal is the same - an unexpected possession.

Roundball 101 teaches that most possessions end without a steal and most rebounds go to the defensive team.

Evidently, Steelville graduate Tyler Tiemann is due for some remedial schooling at Webster University because 12 of his 27 rebounds this season have come on the offensive end.

The biggest problem with this scenario is, well, bigness. Tiemann is stealing those rebounds from the big boys despite measuring in at 5-foot-11.

Tiemann, a guard who hooked on with the Gorloks after a pair of successful seasons at Meramec Community College, has played in all 18 games this season and is averaging 9.9 minutes in those games.

In his most recent game, Tiemann hit one field goal to finish with two points during Webster's 72-70 win over Westminster on Wednesday.

The win lifts the Gorloks to 10-8 overall and 7-3 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Tiemann will get more chances to steal offensive boards this week when Webster hits the road to take on Eureka College on Wednesday and Spalding University on Saturday. …

Indoor track

Southeast Missouri State thrower Joshua Uchtman honored his Steeleville roots this past weekend with an eighth-place finish in the shot put at the Indiana Relays.

The meet is hosted annually by Indiana University in the Gladstein Fieldhouse and is an early-season look at the state's top indoor talent. Uchtman's best throw out of six attempts landed 51-feet, 1-inch away from the throwing circle.

As per tradition, no team scores were kept at the event. Following an off weekend, SEMO and Uchtman will return to the Gladstein Fieldhouse for the Hoosier Hills Invitational on Feb. 13. …

Names, Names, Names

Indoor track is already underway. Baseball and softball in some cases will start this month. If anyone wants to add a name to my growing list, please e-mail me (Dan62801@aol.com). I will need the name of the athlete, the former high school or city if that is needed, the college/university they are attending and of course, the sport they are playing. Please put "Randolph County Herald Tribune" in the subject line of each and every email. If your son/daughter is a grad of Chester, Steeleville or Trico High Schools they are eligible to be included in this column. We are working to get sponsors in Sparta and Red Bud. As soon as we have some financial backing from those communities, we will include their athletes.
