Lincoln Keepsake from 1966

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Pinckneyville resident Mrs. Shirley Welsch celebrated President Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday today by pulling from her keepsakes an envelope--originally her grandmother's--bearing a 4-cent Lincoln first class stamp. The envelope has a 1966 cancellation date. The stamp is a great piece of artwork and existed in contrast to today's pop culture stamps. The first class 4-cent stamp has grown to 42 cents in price, and in May will climb again to 44 cents. The envelope originally belonged to Helena Jenkel and contained craft patterns for seeds to be glued and to make colorful designs. Mrs. Welsch said her grandmother didn't drive and since she lived farther out of town communicated mostly through the mail. Lincoln's 200th birthday was celebrated in Illinois, across the nation and around the world today. You have to go no farther than your pocket change and the Lincoln penny to find the legacy of his life.
