Emotions Run High in Du Bois
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[ Emotional residents near a planned southern Illinois plant that would convert coal into synthetic natural gas filled the Du Bois Knights of Columbus hall Tuesday night to voice their opposition to the plant.
Most complained that the "secret" plant will be located "at our back door" and say the environmental consequences are unknown.
Resident Mark Spotanski says hearing that the billion-dollar Power Holdings LLC plant proposed near Waltonville in Jefferson County would be just several hundred yards from his back door was like "dropping a bomb on us."
On at least two occasions, the hearing officer had to settle the crowd, saying their outbursts after comments and testimony from opponents were out of line
Backers say the plant's creation of synthetic natural gas will allow suppliers to use existing coal mines, cutting transportation costs and dependence on out-of-state providers.
The state Environmental Protection Agency has made a preliminary determination that the plant is entitled to a construction permit.
Nearly 200 residents who reside near the proposed site have voiced their opposition.
The plant would be located five miles south of Illinois Rt. 15 near the Blissville Township in Jefferson County.
