PCHS BASEBALL: Gill, Panthers Perfect on Opening Day
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[ Pinckneyville Community High School senior Matt Gill needed just 54 pitches-and barely over an hour-to dispatch Freeburg with a perfect game in Tuesday's baseball senior opener Tuesday at Rigdon Field.
The Panthers scored 10 runs in the opening inning, three coming on Garrick Hale's bases loaded double. Thomas McConnell also had two RBI in the frame with Jeff Thornton, Gill and Dustin Winter contributing the other run-scoring hits.
"This was a good opening effort for us," PCHS coach Alan Engelhardt said. "Matt Gill was very good on the mound. He threw a perfect game by attacking the hitters. We had him on a 65-pitch limit. At the plate, we really swung the bats well with seven of the nine batters getting hits."
Hale and McConnell were both 3-for-3 at the plate with doubles and knocked in three runs apiece.
Thornton also contributed two hits and Gill doubled.
"We had three players make their first varsity starts today," Engelhardt said. "And with the experienced kids taking charge, they settled in nicely."
Pinckneyville plays Seneca at 3:30 Wednesday. The game is played at Rent One Park in Marion.
