Judges: Soloists, Percussion Section ‘Perfect'

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[ The music department of the Du Quoin Middle School competed in the Illinois Grade School Music Association's District 3-West Solo and Ensemble Contest, which was held on Saturday, March 14, 2008 at the Sparta/Lincoln Middle School, Sparta, Illinois.

Du Quoin received four (4) First Superior ratings, thirty-three (33) Division 1 ratings, and ten (10) Division 2 ratings.

Soloists Hannah Hamburger, flute; Denton Graham, tenor saxophone; Morgan Dennis, flute; and the percussion choir "Mo Cowbell!" all achieved a perfect score in Class A and received a first superior rating. The first superior rating is only awarded to an exceptionally outstanding performance of a solo or ensemble resulting in a perfect score in Class A. The percussion choir includes: Braden Woodside, Nolan Graham, Skyler Schwarz, Trystin Mansfield, Trevor Jones, Broady Butler, Kody Kattenbraker, Jason Nelson, Cody Cavins, Jordan Carson, Kayle Armstrong, and Kelly Genesio.

Saxophone section: Hailey Harsy, Jacob Fisher, Nicole Clark, Carissa Graham, Brittney Heatherly, Denton Graham, Melinda Peters, Austin Korbar, and Amber Knapp.

Trumpet Section: Cole McKinzie, Cody Bailey, Hayden Schubert, Jordan Graham, and Austin Ford.

Trombone Section: Cole Cobin, Collin Dorsey and Benjie Eubanks.

Rhythm Section: Hannah Hamburger, piano; Kaylee Ridgeway and Brandon Graham, bass; Broady Butler, guitar; Bradon Woodside, Skyer Schwarz and Nolan Graham, percussion.

The following students received a Division 2 rating:

Angie Wright, flute solo; Melaina Harsy, clarinet solo; Meagan Lively, clarinet solo; Kaylee Ridgeway, clarinet solo; Madison Swayne, clarinet solo; Samuel Manning, alto saxophone solo; Melinda Peters, tenor saxophone solo; Trevor Jones, snare drum solo; Kody Kattenbraker, snare drum solo; Trystin Mansfield, snare drum solo.

Director Jon Montgomery would like to thank his student teacher Brian Plate and those who accompany the students at contest. Their hard work is part of the success listed above. Accompanists include: Marla Uhles, Linda Davis, Susan Graham.

The middle school band will next compete in the Illinois Grade School Music Association's District 3 Organization Contest, which will be held on March 27, at the Marion Jr. High School, Marion, Illinois. The band is scheduled to perform at 7:30 PM.

The annual spring concert featuring both the middle school and high school bands will be Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at the Labor Pavilion in the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds beginning at 6:30 PM.
