</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[ Despite matching host Goreville with eight hits, Elverado High School's softball team surrendered three unearned runs and dropped a 7-4 decision Monday afternoon.

The Lady Falcons are 2-2 and scheduled to visit West Frankfort Tuesday.

Goreville is 2-1.

"We hit the ball hard, pitched well and we scored some runs," EHS coach Donette Wheatley said. "Unfortunately two errors in the third inning absolutely killed us."

The Lady Falcons jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning on RBI hits from Kelsey Tuthill and Lacie Tow and used Courtney Morse's run-scoring single to briefly stretch that lead to 3-0 in the third.

Goreville, however, turned two runs and two hits against Elverado ace Jenna Cochran (1-2) into a 3-3 tie.

The Lady Blackcats bolted ahead with two more runs in the fourth and never trailed.

Morse had three hits for Elverado with Cochran and Mallory Winthrop notching two safeties each. Kelsi Teague also singled.

J. Cochran had nine strikeouts in four innings with Teague finishing up and whiffing two more.

The Lady Falcons played without two starters, catcher Katie Watts (fractured toe) and Sami Hicks (ruptured cyst).
