WEEKEND UPDATE: Regional titles for Du Quoin, Elverado and Pinckneyville

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[ Three local teams are headed for IHSA Sectional Tournament play following regional championship victories Saturday.

In Class 2A softball, Pinckneyville (27-7) blitzed Johnston City 8-0 to win the Du Quoin Regional Tournament. Next up for the Lady Panthers will be Anna-Jonesboro Wednesday at 4:30 in the Pinckneyville Sectional. A-J defeated defending state champ Carterville to win at Vienna.

Also advancing to Pinckneyville after winning regional titles are Carmi-White County and Waterloo Gibault.

Elverado High School claimed its first regional title in over a decade, edging past Galatia-Thompsonville 2-1 in Class 1A at Elkville. Now 16-8, the Lady Falcons play host Trico Wednesday at 4:30 as sectional play starts. Defending state 1A champ Cobden and Pope County also advanced.

A diving catch of a line drive by first baseman Seth Flint helped preserve Du Quoin's 20th baseball regional title as the Indians escaped host Pinckneyville 12-11.

With a 21-7 overall record, Du Quoin's bound for the Greenville Sectional to play Greenville at 4:30 Wednesday. Wesclin and Edwardsville's Metro East Lutheran are the other two semifinalists.
